It all started with a lonely bag of Oreos…

Yesterday morning’s hardcore aerobic class began with the instructor rhapsodizing about some brownies she’d recently made. She spent the entire warm-up talking about these chocolate brownies with Oreo cookies baked in the middle. I know many people would not take dessert tips from someone who probably has less than 17 percent body fat, but I figure she is actually a good source. By the looks of things, the instructor rarely eats, so these brownies must’ve been really, really worth it. Though I don’t buy Oreos — I swear!– we just happened to have a very lonely bag of the contraband in our cupboard. It was smuggled in to our sons by my husband’s mother (hey, thanks grandma!). So last night I gave it a whirl. I guess there is a reason why Oreos are widely cited as America’s best-selling cookie. They make the most decadent dessert even better! I’m sure that white line is, like, hydrogenated fat and high fructose corn syrup. But, boy, it sure does taste good. Want to make them? It’s easy: put half your brownie batter in the pan, add a layer of fully intact cookies, cover with the rest of the batter and bake. That’s it. You know, I just recalled an email I got from JAMA last week. A recent study found more frequent eating of chocolate is associated with lower BMI. So I gotta go read that — and have another brownie, of course.
