And about flip flops…

In my last riveting blog post, I mentioned my penchant for flip flops. And because we’re heading into fall so nobody else will be talking of flip flops now AND because I’m in Southern Cal and thus am a flip flop expert, I think we should discuss my faves: Fit-Flops. In fact, since I bought my first pair of Fit-Flops I’ve ditched all others. Fit-Flops are the shoes that claim they help burn calories/cellulite, etc. I’m not a devotee for these reasons, though. I’ve written about this topic for magazines several times and I know that that while a variety of shoe companies make the claims, the benefits aren’t really enough to keep anyone out of the gym. You can’t simply change your footgear and think that’s enough exercise to do anything substantial. I’m a Fit-Flop lover, though, because they are quite simply the most comfortable and functional flip flop. I can walk my dog for a couple of miles in these shoes, which I’ve never been able to do in any other flip flop or sandal. Also, I’ve found the material that many flip flops are made of out to be annoying…sometimes it makes your feet feel weird or hot, other times the thong part breaks. Fit-Flops aren’t cheap, but at least they don’t break or make your feet feel funky. I like this.

Now for the last reason I’m a fan. They were introduced by Marcia Kilgore. In the ’90s I used to interview Marcia, who was a facialist in New York City. Her small shop was called Let’s Face It! Pretty quickly, she grew from Let’s Face It! to opening Bliss Spa and then launching the Bliss Catalog. I once received a beautiful throw blanket from her for Christmas (I’m sure I was among the 1,000 journalists and others who received them). That’s not the reason I ever interviewed her or now buy her shoes, though. This is just extra info that I started to think about this morning when I was taking pictures of my Fit-Flops. I’m guessing that Kilgore came up with the Fit-Flop idea because Bliss was one of the first places you could buy MBTs (athletic/walking shoes with the extra benefits). Anyhow, I found this bio of Marcia Kilgore and it makes me like her even more. It doesn’t include the Fit-Flop info, but I’ve already filled you in about that. By the way, I got a pedicure yesterday. And that’s probably also why I feel warranted in taking pix of my feet today.
